CHAPTER 17
NASH
Opening my eyes, the smell of vanilla permeates around me. I tilt my head down to see Sophia sleeping soundly in front of me and a peace settles over me. The sunlight shining through the window alerts me that it has to be early morning and as much as I may not want to, I need to leave. I still have to stop at my apartment before heading into work.
I slowly pull my arms from around her waist, trying not to wake her. Turning to my other side, Iâm prepared to get out of bed, when I come face to face with her mountain lion of a cat, purring deep in sleep on the other side of the pillow. I gently remove the blanket, but when he opens his eyes and meows at me, I have to admit that Sophiaâs right. He may be trouble, but heâs adorable, even if he needs to learn to give us our privacy. I chuckle at the reminder of him watching us from the bathroom doorway.
Climbing out of bed, I head into the bathroom to change into my clothes, then head back over to Sophiaâs side of the bed and sit on it. I move the hair that has fallen over her face and tuck it behind her ear. She lets out a soft sigh and cuddles deeper into her pillows.
She loves me. She still loves me.
I think back to my plan to have her love me again, more this time than ever before, and although she said it, I resolve to give myself more time to tell her about my past.
Leaning down, I kiss her soft lips, and her eyelids flutter open. âI have to get going and I didnât want to leave without saying goodbye.â
âNoâ¦â she whines, âI was comfortable and warm. Come back to bed.â She lifts her arms and wiggles her fingers to welcome me back in.
I smile at how adorable she is and rub my knuckles across her cheek. âIâll see you at work. Go back to sleep.â
âMmmkay,â she mumbles, closing her eyes. I wait until I know sheâs fallen back to sleep and stand to leave.
âNash,â I hear her whisper and halt in my tracks, but when I turn back around, sheâs still sound asleep. I wonder if sheâs dreaming of me. I hope so. I want her mornings, her days, her nights, and even her dreams to be of me because God knows mine now belong to her.
With one last long gaze at her, I leave her room. My heart is heavy and I already miss her.
